THE LIFE SKILLS PROGRAM

The Life Skills Program, which has been named Beyond the Classroom (AKA: B.T.C.) has been operating for over 10 years in Slave Lake.

Over time, the structure of the program and the students have changed, but the vision has stayed the same.   In this small group setting student activities, projects and assignments are linked to Life Skills which prepare them for life after school.

This locally designed program involves students working on curricula that does not result in the Life Skills students earning a High School Diploma.  However, this program focuses on students using functional life skills and applying them to real-life situations..  All while doing this, we strive to have a flexible learning environment where students’ needs are met in a safe and accepting way.

Some skills that are taught include community mobility skills,  job awareness skills, budgeting, communication skills, personal safety, social skills, decision-making skills and the list goes on.  Ultimately, the program is designed to suit individual student needs.

According to the World Health Organization, “life skills” are abilities that help to promote mental well being, competence for adaptive and positive behaviour that enable young minds to deal effectively with the demands and challenges of everyday life.  We live true to this definition… “‘Cause that’s how we roll”.
